DIY Solar Panels in the UK: What You Can (and Can't) Install Yourself

Doing your own solar can save you money and appeal if you are practical and want to understand your system inside out. But solar sits partly under electrical and grid rules, so there are clear limits on what you can legally do yourself in the UK.

This guide explains exactly where DIY is fine, where you must bring in a qualified electrician, and what to buy to get started. If you would rather have the whole job done for you, you can request a quote at any point.

Can you legally install solar panels yourself in the UK?

You can do a lot of the work yourself, but you cannot legally do all of it. The dividing line is the electrical connection.

Mounting panels on your roof and running the DC cabling is work a competent DIYer can take on. The connection to your consumer unit (fuse board) and the grid must be done by a qualified electrician, because that work falls under Part P of the Building Regulations and the BS 7671 wiring standard. Getting this wrong is dangerous and can invalidate your insurance.

Off-grid versus grid-tied: the key difference

The rules depend on whether your system connects to the grid.

  • Grid-tied systems feed into your home's wiring and can export to the grid. These need a qualified electrician for the connection and a notification to your network operator (a G98 notification for most home-sized systems). This is the route for cutting your mains bill.

  • Off-grid systems are not connected to the grid at all. They power a cabin, outbuilding, boat or campervan from their own panels and battery. There is far more you can safely do yourself here, because you are not tying into your home's mains or the grid.

What DIY means for MCS, SEG payments and warranties

This is the part that catches people out. To claim payments for the electricity you export under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), your system generally needs to be installed by an MCS-certified installer. A pure DIY grid-tied install will usually not qualify for MCS, which means you forfeit SEG income. You should also check that self-installing does not affect your product warranties.

For that reason, many people take a hybrid approach: they buy the components, do the parts they can, and pay a certified installer to design, sign off and connect the system so it stays MCS-eligible. If that appeals, get in touch for a quote and we can advise on the split.

What you need for a DIY solar setup

Step-by-step overview of a self-install

This is the shape of a typical install so you know what is involved. It is an overview, not a substitute for the manufacturer instructions and a qualified electrician for the connection.

  1. Plan and size the system. Work out your energy use, roof space and orientation. Our home solar buyer's guide covers sizing.

  3. Mount the panels and run the DC cabling. Secure the panels to the rails and connect them, keeping everything isolated and safe while you work.

  4. Install the inverter and battery. Position them in a suitable, ventilated location.

  5. Connect and commission (electrician). The qualified electrician makes the final connection to your consumer unit, tests the system, and handles the DNO notification.

When DIY isn't worth it

DIY makes most sense for off-grid setups and for confident, practical people who want a hybrid approach. It makes less sense if you want the simplest path to lower bills with full SEG income and warranties intact. In that case a professional install is usually the better value, because it keeps you MCS-eligible, is fully certified, and comes with proper sign-off.
